About PDS Gaya

PDS Gaya is one of the most successfully operating and well-organized Public Distribution Systems throughout the country wherein the Gaya District Administration and the Bihar State Government are doing a great job to check all threats to the proper functioning of the system.

PDS otherwise Public Distribution System is an initiation by the Government of India to distribute essential commodities to every section of the society across the country through a network of Fair Price Shops (FPS) on a recurring basis. The commodities hence provided are given below.
  • Wheat
  • Rice
  • Sugar
  • Kerosene

Despite the many challenges in managing the FPS across the country, PDS is however considered a major instrument of the Government's economic policy to ensure the availability of day-to-day necessary commodities to even the poorest of poor communities across the country.

PDS works in coalition of the Central Government with the State Governments. The former takes the responsibility of procuring, storing, transporting and allocating of food grains and other commodities to the states and distribution of the commodities to the consumers through the network of FPSs rests with the State Governments. The State Governments and the District Administrations identify families below and above poverty line and accordingly issue ration cards. It is also their role to supervise and monitor the function of the Fair Price Shops.

The Gaya District Administration currently issues coupons to all consumers with which they can acquire their share of food grains and necessary commodities. These coupons ensure that food grains and other necessary commodities are not lifted by unauthorized consumers and also check black-marketing of the same. The District Administration and the State Government are taking relevant steps to make sure that the food grain supply chain management is done at its optimum level which thereby will minimize losses and guarantee the availability of commodities to the consumers at all times.

Heightening the security is the fully automated and computerized system with inventory asset management. All warehouses of the Food Corporation of India have computerized weigh bridges and MIS which efficiently track and manage food grains which are allocated to Fair Price Shops. FCI warehouses in Gaya District and overall, Bihar state are also fully computerized with electronic MIS and weigh bridges ensuring a fair distribution of all necessary commodities to the people.
